Packing & Clothing Layers

Three climates in one month: early fall in Winnipeg, hard frost by Thompson, and a sub-arctic Hudson Bay shoreline at Churchill. One layering system covers it all — sized for the coldest week.

Where this came from. This guide was compiled from published sources — outfitter recommendations, Environment Canada climate normals, and observed weather at our stops in 2024 and 2025. It has not been reviewed by the caravan leadership team. Treat it as a well-researched starting point rather than official guidance, and check with the caravan leaders on anything that affects your rig or your own health and comfort.

The big picture: southern Manitoba in mid-September is often shirtsleeves by day, jacket by night. Thompson in early October sits near freezing. Churchill (Oct 2–7) runs 30s–40s °F by day, at or below freezing at night — and it's the windiest month of the year on the bay. Pack a complete layering system and size everything for the Churchill leg; the southern weeks simply use fewer of the same pieces.

Temperature ranges below combine observed weather at each stop during our dates in 2024 and 2025 with the 1991–2020 climate normals. Both recent Octobers opened mild in Churchill — that's luck, not a promise. Pack for the cold end of the range.

The Layer System — What to Pack

One kit covers the whole trip: wear one or two layers in the south, all of them in Churchill. Avoid cotton next to your skin — it traps sweat and chills you. Tap items to check them off; your list is remembered on this device.

1 · Base layer (wicking, against the skin)

2 · Mid layer (everyday warmth)

3 · Insulation layer (Churchill)

4 · Shell (wind + water)

Extras worth their weight

Dressing It, Leg by Leg

Southern Manitoba (Sep 11 – ~28)

Light layers: base + fleece or light jacket, rain gear within reach. Warm afternoons, cool mornings. If a front pushes overnight lows toward freezing (watch the forecast around Dauphin / Swan River), add the thermal base and a warm hat.

Thompson & the train (late Sep – early Oct)

Switch to winter mode: thermal base, mid layer, hat, gloves, waterproof boots. The RVs stay in Thompson — pack your entire Churchill cold-weather kit in your train luggage, not the trailer.

Churchill (Oct 2–7)

Full stack for any outdoor time. Buggies and lodges are heated, but windows open for photos and you'll be in and out. For aurora nights, over-dress on purpose: base + mid + insulation + parka, snow pants, mittens, balaclava, warmers in gloves and boots. Clear nights — the good aurora nights — are also the coldest.

The drive home (Oct 8–13)

Keep the winter kit accessible; late-October Winnipeg can see the first measurable snow.

Good to Know

Parka & boot rentals — before you buy anything expensive: Frontiers North (our Churchill operator) runs a gear rental program: Canada Goose ‘Ontario’ and ‘Constable’ parkas (three-quarter length, unisex, XS–3XL), Canada Goose Tundra Bib overalls, and Baffin ‘Impact’ boots — men's 7–14, women's 6–11. You reserve by submitting their Gear Form, and they come back to you on sizes and payment, so do it early rather than at the last minute. Two things worth knowing: the boots run narrow, so order up a size if you're a half size; and parka style and colour aren't guaranteed — not every parka has fur. Renting the big three doesn't get you out of bringing your own base and mid layers, hat, gloves, socks and warmers.

Rental pricing isn't published on their site — ask when you submit the form.

What actually goes on the train: the rigs stay in Thompson, so everything you need for Churchill has to fit in what you carry aboard — parka, boots, the whole cold-weather kit, plus medications and camera gear. Pack that as a separate bag before Thompson rather than digging through the trailer on departure morning. Check the current VIA Rail baggage allowance for the Winnipeg–Churchill train while you're packing; the caravan leaders will confirm the group's arrangements closer to the date.

2026 flood conditions: June 2026 flooding hit the Swan River / Dauphin / Parkland corridor hard — hundreds of road, bridge and culvert sites damaged. Expect soft, muddy campsites and check manitoba511.ca for road status. Waterproof footwear matters more this year than usual.

Before you leave: weather varies a lot year to year (Sep 2024 was warm, Sep 2025 wetter and cooler). Recheck the Environment Canada 7-day forecasts for Winnipeg, Thompson and Churchill in the days before departure and adjust.
