The schedule
The rigs stay in Thompson. You ride the train up and back, and everything you need for five days in Churchill goes with you.
| When | What |
|---|---|

| Fri, Oct 2 · 3:50 PM | Gather with carry-on for the ride to the station |
| Fri, Oct 2 · 5:00 PM | Train departs Thompson — a 16-hour run, overnight |
| Sat, Oct 3 · 9:00 AM | Arrive Churchill, met by Frontiers North escorts |
| Tue, Oct 6 · 7:30 PM | Night train departs Churchill for Thompson |

Transport to the station is arranged and paid for by the campground owners — private vehicles or taxi, included in the camping fees. Thursday Oct 1 is your day to pick up whatever you still need for the train.
Seating and sleeping
What's included
The caravan travels in Economy Plus on the day coach, and that fare is included in the kitty fee. There is also a dome car on the train.
One Economy car seats 68. The seats rotate, so a group of four can face each other, and the foot rests come up — which lets you lie across the seats. The caravan may be seated first, but that's the train manager's call, not a guarantee.
Honest expectation from the co-leaders: nobody got much sleep on the way up, because everyone was too excited. The ride back was much quieter.
If you're in the coach
Bring a pillow and a blanket. The coach gets cool overnight and VIA does not provide bedding in Economy Plus. The caravan hands out black bags to store your pillow and bedding while you're in Churchill, so you're not carrying them around town.
If you booked a sleeper
VIA provides pillows and blankets — you don't need to bring your own. Upgrades were sold round trip as an extra, first come first served, and were arranged through the caravan with Frontiers North. The 2026 inventory ran to one cabin for two (bunk beds with a ladder and its own bathroom), four cabins for one (the bed folds down over the toilet overnight), and two upper/lower berths — the lower berth has a window, the upper does not.
| Accommodation | Round trip, as of Feb 1 2026 |
|---|---|
| Upper/lower berth for 2 | $820 CAD · $656 USD (2 people) |
| Cabin for 1 | $687.50 CAD · $550 USD (1 person) |
| Cabin for 2 | $1,375 CAD · $1,100 USD (2 people) |
| Cabin for 3, discounted to 2 | $1,905 CAD · $1,524 USD (2 people) |
Prices include 5% GST. Booking for upgrades closed on May 1, 2026 — the table is here for reference and for anyone comparing notes on board.
Baggage
| Type | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Carry-on | 1 personal item (25 lb · 17 × 6 × 13 in) and 1 item (50 lb · 62 linear in),
or 2 items at 25 lb each. Linear inches = length + width + height. |
| Checked | 2 items, 50 lb max each |
Checked bags are handled as a group on Oct 2 — they go to the lot at 2:50 PM and to the station at 3:00, so pack the day bag you want with you separately and early. Coming home from Churchill, checked baggage goes outside your room the morning of Oct 6 for transfer, and you keep your carry-on for the day's activities.
Comfort and motion sickness
Some past participants have had motion sickness on this run. If you're prone to it, tell the co-leaders as early as you can — they will board you first so you get first pick of the seating, which makes a real difference. Facing forward helps; a window or aisle seat may suit you better than the middle.
As they put it: they want your trip to be as awesome as possible, so it's worth saying something rather than toughing it out.
Food and drink
There is no dining car — but there is a snack and lounge car. It sells beverages, snacks and sandwiches at reasonable prices, and the co-leaders report decent microwaved breakfast items (eggs, sausage, hash browns). The selection is very limited.
The train cannot accommodate special dietary needs. If you have food restrictions, plan on bringing everything you'll want for 16 hours.
- Pack snacks and the beverages you want for the ride.
- Alcoholic drinks are sold in the dome car.
- Anything alcoholic you bring yourself must ride in checked baggage — not in your carry-on.
Security in Thompson
You pass through security screening in Thompson before boarding. Pack your carry-on with that in mind, and leave time for it in the 3:50 PM gathering.
The donation boxes
The community service donations are sorted in Thompson on Oct 1, and what's bound for Churchill is boxed and loaded onto this train. VIA Rail carries the boxes at no charge to the caravan.
