Avg high / low is the mean daily maximum and minimum over those calendar days, 2010–2024. Recorded range is the actual range seen across those fifteen years — the outer edges, not the norm. Plan for the averages; pack for the edges.
What the numbers actually tell you
The trip runs downhill in temperature the whole way north, then levels out. Winnipeg in mid-September is shirtsleeves in the afternoon. By Thompson you have lost about fifteen degrees off the daytime high, and Churchill takes another eight — averaging just above freezing overnight with days in the low forties.
The spread matters more than the average. Swan River has seen 28° and 82° on the same calendar dates in different years; Winnipeg on the way home has been down to 19°. A single average tells you what to expect, not what to survive.
And an average low of 35° at Churchill is exactly why you are carrying two gallons of RV antifreeze — see winterizing. Overnight lows below freezing during the Churchill week are ordinary, not unlucky.
